Country 29: Meat Pie from Australia

Writer: Brandon NeufeldBrandon Neufeld

Meat pie from Australia come in as my 29th of 30 meals from 30 different countries. These are traditional meat pies that you can find all over Australia at sporting events or gas stations etc. They are normally eaten with a bit of ketchup on the top (seen in photos below).

The meat pies from Australia are a little bit different than what you see from British meat pies as they are made with puff pastry rather than short crust, so they are nice and flakey. The filling is made by pan frying onions, garlic and cubed flank steak, then making a sauce with beef broth, red wine, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste and fresh rosemary. The beef and onions are left to simmer in the sauce and then a cornstarch slurry is added to thicken the sauce. The filling is then put in the fridge to cool.

Next you blind bake the pie crust by putting in baking beads to weigh it down (dried beans are a good substitute). Once your pie base is done, you fill them with your filling top with a sheet of puff pastry, using an egg wash and a pressing a fork along the sides to help it to stick. Then back in the oven to bake until you have a beautiful hand pie.

These Australian meat pies turned out fairly well, although I think I made the pie base a little too thin so they kind of collapsed when cut into. Other than that though, the meat was tender and the sauce was really rich and beefy. Overall a really great meal and one that I will definitely make again, I think it would go great with grilled mushrooms next time!

Thank you so much for reading and I hope to see you back for the final meal, # 30, in the next few days! As always extra photos and the updated map can be found below.

Cheers,

Brandon
